Martham
Parish Council

"Working to make Martham a greener, safer and more attractive village for all"

What the Parish
Council Does

The Parish Council meets at 7.30pm every third Wednesday of the month (except August) in the School Room at the back of the Methodist Church on Repps Road. Members of the public are welcome at all Council meetings but are not allowed to participate. Time is allotted just before the start of meetings for a Public Forum where residents can raise any issues and ask questions.

The Council represents residents bests interests by maintaining close and regular contact with the Borough Council, County Council, Police and schools. We constantly lobby those bodies to maintain, improve and look after facilities in our village. We enhance the services provided by these authorities by providing extra maintenance and litter picking.

We provide the May Scarecrow Festival and the Christmas lights on the Village Greens.

We own, maintain and manage the Village Greens and central  ponds to preserve their heritage for the benefit of the whole community. This includes ownership and maintenance of the the central car parks. We also manage the open space in front of the Medical Centre on Hemsby Road.

We own and manage the bus shelters in the village.

We manage the allotments on Cess Road, that are fully let.

We provided and maintain all the village signs.

We provide and promote the use of the glass, clothes and shoe recycling banks in the central village car park and elsewhere.

We plant trees and bulbs around the village to improve the environment. We manage the 31 trees on the village greens.

We are consulted about planning applications and give a local view about how they affect the community which is especially important in the conservation area of the village.

We oversee the management of the network of 21 footpaths in and around the village. The upkeep of most of them is the responsibility of Norfolk County Council or the Broads Authority but we cut and maintain eight paths.

We give grants and promote local organisations like the Village Hall, Playing Field and St Mary's Church yard.

We take the lead or sponsor new projects like the play area on the playing field, the (2009) rescue of the Youth & Community Centre, and a new conservation area in Common Road.

We are very active and successful in applying for and getting grants for all sots of projects around the village. These have helped to pay for things like the Repps Road bus shelter, youth club and conservation projects.
